Fernando de Rojas was a Spanish author and playwright best known for "La Celestina," a pivotal work in Spanish literature marking the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Born in La Puebla de Montalbán around 1470, Rojas was a converso of Jewish descent and practiced law in Talavera de la Reina. His singular masterpiece, published in 1499, remains a cornerstone in the study of early modern European drama.
Love is a hidden fire, a pleasant sore, a delicious poison, a sweet bitterness, a delightful pain, a sweet and throbbing wound, a gentle death.
The greatest enemy of love is indifference.
Those who do not risk, do not gain.
Fortune is blind and does not see where it strikes.
In adversity, it is easy to despair.
What is done out of love always takes place beyond good and evil.
Jealousy is born with love, but it does not die with it.
The heart has its reasons which reason does not know.
The flame of love is not as easily extinguished as one might think.
There is no love without pain.
A moment of patience can prevent a lifetime of regret.
He who seeks love without finding it is like a man who searches for water in the desert.
