She left her seven sweet children home to rest and told them, 'Be good. I won't be gone long.'
They waited and waited, but their mother didn't return.
Suddenly, a knock came at the door.
'I am the witch Heckedy Peg!' she cried. 'I have come to take one of you away!'
'Choose the child who belongs to me, or I will take you all!'
The oldest child said, 'I am Susie, and I belong to you, Heckedy Peg.'
Susie vanished, and in her place, there was a loaf of bread.
