Jude Duarte and her twin sister Taryn, along with their older half-fae sister Vivienne, are brought to the High Court of Faerie when they are seven years old. Their human parents are murdered by Madoc, Vivi's biological father and a general in the High King's army, who then takes the girls to live with him in Elfhame. Ten years later, Jude and Taryn, as mortals, struggle to find their place in the immortal world of Faerie. They attend lessons with other young fae nobles, where they are constantly tormented by Prince Cardan, the youngest and most malicious son of High King Eldred, and his cruel friends Nicasia, Locke, and Valerian.
