The Aptitude Test
Beatrice Prior, a sixteen-year-old from the Abnegation faction, takes her aptitude test to find her best faction. Tori, a Dauntless woman, gives the test, which is a simulation where Beatrice makes choices. The results are not clear for one faction; they show aptitudes for Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless. Tori warns Beatrice to keep her 'Divergent' results secret, explaining that the Erudite are looking for people like her. Beatrice returns home, troubled by this news and her upcoming decision.
The Choosing Ceremony
The Choosing Ceremony arrives, a day when all sixteen-year-olds declare their chosen faction. Beatrice's brother, Caleb, surprises everyone by choosing Erudite, upsetting their Abnegation parents. When it is Beatrice's turn, she hesitates, torn between her family and her true self. She chooses Dauntless, jumping onto the platform and into the Dauntless section. This choice means leaving her family and the selfless life she has always known for a life of bravery and risk. She renames herself Tris.
Dauntless Initiation: Stage One
Tris begins Dauntless initiation, which has three stages. The first stage involves physical training, like fighting and using weapons. Tris, being small and from Abnegation, struggles at first and often ranks low. She becomes friends with Christina, Will, and Al, other initiates, and makes an enemy of Peter, a cruel Candor transfer. She also meets Four, a Dauntless instructor, who is strict but observant. Tris pushes herself, refusing to be cut from the faction, and eventually improves, earning respect from some peers.
The Tattoo Parlor and Developing Relationships
During a training break, Tris visits the Dauntless tattoo parlor. She gets three raven tattoos, symbolizing her family and past, and later the Dauntless and Abnegation symbols. This act helps define her new identity. Her relationship with Four grows; he is often harsh but also protective, and Tris is drawn to him despite his mysterious nature. He begins teaching her hand-to-hand combat, seeing her potential and pushing her. Their interactions have a growing attraction, complicated by their instructor-initiate roles.
Dauntless Initiation: Stage Two - Fear Landscape
Stage Two of initiation involves simulations that confront initiates with their fears. Tris does well at these because her Divergence allows her to manipulate the simulations and overcome fears faster than others. However, this also risks exposing her. Four notices her unusual abilities and realizes she is Divergent, then reveals he is also Divergent. He helps her hide her abilities during the simulations. This shared secret strengthens their bond, and they become romantically involved, finding comfort in each other during the harsh initiation.
Al's Betrayal and Suicide
As initiation rankings become more competitive, Tris's success makes her a target. Peter, Drew, and Al, jealous of her rising status, ambush her one night, trying to throw her into the Chasm. Four saves her, but Tris is deeply hurt by Al's involvement. Despite her forgiveness, Al feels consumed by guilt and shame. Unable to cope with his actions and Dauntless life, Al dies by suicide, jumping into the Chasm. His death affects Tris and the other initiates, showing the extreme pressures of their chosen faction.
The Erudite Attack and Dauntless Alliance
The Erudite faction, led by Jeanine Matthews, increases its campaign against Abnegation, publishing articles accusing them of corruption and hoarding resources. This creates unrest and suspicion among factions, especially in Dauntless, where many believe the Erudite's claims. Tris visits her brother Caleb in Erudite, hoping to understand their motives, but finds him increasingly influenced. She also visits her family in Abnegation, where her mother reveals she was a Dauntless transfer, hinting at society's hidden complexities.
Dauntless Initiation: Stage Three - The Fear Landscape
The final stage of Dauntless initiation is a personal fear landscape, a simulation that cycles through an initiate's fears quickly. This is a public test, watched by Dauntless leaders. Tris, with Four's help, learns to control her heart rate and manipulate the simulations without revealing her Divergence. She completes her fear landscape, showing bravery and control. She ranks first among the initiates, securing her place in Dauntless and proving her strength, while subtly hiding her true nature.
The Mind Control Serum
After initiation, Tris and the other new Dauntless members are injected with what they think is a tracking device. However, it is a mind-control serum made by the Erudite. That night, the serum activates, turning almost all Dauntless into a mindless army, programmed to attack Abnegation. Tris, being Divergent, is immune, as is Four, who has also developed resistance. They realize the Erudite's plan to overthrow Abnegation and take control. They must now fight their own faction to save Tris's family and the Abnegation.
Escape and Resistance
Tris and Four, the only conscious Dauntless, pretend to be under the serum's influence to avoid detection. They escape the Dauntless compound during the attack on Abnegation. Their goal is to find other Divergents or a way to stop the Erudite's plan. They meet Tris's mother, who reveals her Dauntless past and helps them navigate the city. During their escape, Tris's mother dies protecting her, a loss that strengthens Tris's resolve. They eventually find refuge with other Abnegation survivors.
Confrontation and Four's Capture
Tris, Four, and a small group of Abnegation survivors, including Tris's father and Caleb, decide to infiltrate the Dauntless control room at Erudite headquarters to shut down the simulation. During the infiltration, Tris's father sacrifices himself so Tris can continue. Tris confronts Four, whom Jeanine Matthews has captured and reprogrammed to be under her control. He attacks Tris, but she breaks through the programming by appealing to his true identity, Tobias, and their shared history. Together, they reach the control room.
Shutting Down the Simulation
Inside the control room, Tris confronts Jeanine Matthews, who created the mind-control plan. Jeanine tries to use another simulation on Tris, but Tris, with her Divergent abilities, resists and fights back. Four disables the master control system, stopping the Dauntless simulation and freeing the soldiers. The attack on Abnegation ends, but many Abnegation lives are lost. Tris and Four, along with Caleb and a few others, escape on a train, unsure of their future but determined to expose the truth and find a new path.
