Wax is initially forced to return to Elendel to assume leadership of House Ladrian after his uncle and sister are killed, but he is drawn back into his lawman role when his fiancée, Steris Harms's sister, Telsin, is kidnapped by the Vanishers during their wedding's pre-celebration. This event, coupled with the ongoing disappearances, forces him to investigate the criminal underworld of the city.

The Vanishers are a sophisticated criminal organization led by the mysterious Bleeder, who turns out to be Lessie/Paalm. Their primary goal is to steal significant amounts of atium from the wealthy noble houses and the government, believing it to be a key component for a larger, more destructive plan involving the manipulation of a god.

Wayne is a Twinborn, a Crasher (Allomantic Pushing) and a Bendalloy Gnat (Feruchemical Speed). He can also expertly mimic accents and voices. As Wax's partner, he provides comic relief, often uses his Feruchemical speed to swap objects unnoticed, and is a loyal, if eccentric, companion who helps Wax in combat and investigation.

The 'Bleeder' is the alias used by the leader of the Vanishers, a powerful Twinborn with unique abilities. The twist is that the Bleeder is actually Paalm, who Wax knew as Lessie, his former partner and lover in the Roughs. She was thought to be dead, having sacrificed herself to save Wax, but was resurrected and manipulated by Harmony.

The Lord Ruler had accumulated an immense secret cache of atium, which the Vanishers, specifically Bleeder/Paalm, are attempting to steal.
